What is The Red Kettle Challenge? Why $1000?

WHAT: The Red Kettle Challenge offers a new twist to the traditional Red Kettles seen at Christmas to raise funds for those in need. You will still see friendly bell ringers and Red Kettles at area store fronts and retailers raising funds. We are issuing the Red Kettle Challenge in our community to step up the efforts to help families who are homeless or on the verge of homelessness! We need individuals, companies, schools and churches to accept the challenge of having their own Red Kettle and Bell – then make plans to raise $1000 with their kettle. Because 1 Kettle + 1 Team = 1 Family’s Life Changed! The amount we raise with Kettles will directly affect how many families we can serve all throughout the coming year.

WHY $1000: For $1000 you can provide up to one month of housing and food for a single man or woman experiencing homelessness in our community. Through our supportive programs, these individuals are actively working their way out of homelessness and into stable housing.

WHEN: Red Kettle Challengers can participate between October 24 – December 31. Some people may only have their kettle for a few days or a week and reach the goal while others may commit to raising all they can until December 24th.

HOW: Review all the ways shared to raised funds for your kettle and choose what works best for your situation. Some kettles will have an individual donation for $1000, some kettles will fill up with online donations, others will have a combination of plans to gather donations. However you participate, make it fun and know what a difference you are making!

Here are the 3 basic steps to successfully completing the Red Kettle Challenge

Engage Your Leadership

Having your leaders understand and support the process and the importance of the challenge is vital. We are happy to come speak with them or have them attend a Lunch & Tour so they can see exactly how and where the Red Kettle Challenge funds will be used in changing lives. Will your leadership offer a matching gift?

Recruit a Team Co-Captain for support

You can certainly do this solo but you may find it easier and more fun to share with a Co-Captain for the Red Kettle Challenge. Red Kettle Captains and Co-Captains are the leaders of the Red Kettle Challenge in our community. Kettle Captains serve as a point of contact for The Salvation Army staff, make plans unique to their organization, engage others to help meet the goal and make sure to have fun and celebrate success along the way to filling their kettle!

Create your Plan

You have accepted a challenge to raise at least $1000 with your Red Kettle and you have plenty of time and resources to do this! Take advantage of resources online and make a plan that works for your company, school, or church.

  1. Review the online Red Kettle Challenge Tools and the fundraising page for your team. Send out emails, share on social media, and invite donations to your kettle. Your online and offline donations can help you reach your goal faster!

  2. Review the list of 50 Fast & Fun Ways to fill your Kettle and choose at least 10 to try in the first 10 days.

  3. Visit if you would like to take your kettle and ring at an area Kroger location.

  4. Make sure to have fun and celebrate your progress! Once you reach your goal of $1000 you can turn in your kettle or you may wish to compete for the Top Honors in your division: Company/Association School Church Individual/Family

  5. There will be a variety of awards given out including – All Red Kettle Challenge Teams who raise $1000 will be presented a 2019 Red Kettle Challenge Award.
