The Salvation Army Culinary Training Program is more than just learning about cooking.

Written in his own words by Rodney Moore, The Salvation Army Center of Hope Culinary Training Participant, October 25, 2007

My name is Rodney Moore and I'm an aspiring chef. There's one problem, I'm a convicted felon. You know as well as I do when you're labeled a felon; more times than not the door shuts in your face from all directions. Well, that all changed when The Salvation Army, Mr. Dues and Chef Tim started their internship program, namely with Dismas Charities St. Patrick's House.

Let me explain to you how they saved my life and my relationship with my wife.

I know that I didn't want the streets anymore, but I had no direction. You know what they say, "If you don't know where you're going any road will take you there." What I'm saying is before this opportunity came along I would have pretty much jumped at anything, which in turn would have upset my wife. We didn't have a pre-nup, she had and ultimatum: Get it together or get lost. So I guess I'm on the right track because we were married August 25.

Chef Tim, What can I say about a man that took me under his wing, showing my not only the proper techniques, but the pride and professionalism that come with the territory. I thought cooking a Sunday meal was something. Chef Tim instilled in me the dedication it takes to cook for hundreds and not knowing half the people who are eating. Thank you Chef Tim.

Mr. Dues, I appreciate the open door policy you allowed me to have with you knowing my situation in advance. You can't imagine to what magnitude this has meant to me and my family. You, along with The Salvation Army, need to be commended for taking this chance. For that I would like to thank you.

I'm no where close to where I want to be in my life, but I'm far from where I was. You view it as an internship; I see it as saving my life.
